Why do we want to learn this? Because you have to be with you for the rest of your life.
I’ve talked a lot about how music has been medicine for me. Artists dig deep into their souls to write lyrics, and that healing energy comes through. You feel seen. You feel understood. And you experience the shame-relieving magic of realizing, it’s not just me.
This came into my awareness through the album Cowboys and Angels by George Michael. It came out in 2010—the year before happy bonked me on the head for the first time in my life.
Until then, I had been miserable. I was living an if-then life. If these things happened, then I could be happy.
Then a lyric hit me in the heart right after hitting my ears:
“Please be stronger than your past.
The future may still give you a chance.”
As someone who already had a difficult past at that point, that simple phrase gave me an invitation—to hope for a better future.
When I first heard that song, I was six feet under. I was looking up at okay like it was paradise.
With a strong dedication to being on my own side, I went from rock bottom to hanging in there. And once I hit okay, I began to understand just how much what I thought affected my reality.
That’s when I stopped listening to anything that didn’t contribute to feeling good about myself, my life, or the way I walked through the world.
That included songs, news, TV shows, people—and even my own negative thoughts.
If you want a better future, you cannot drag your past along with you.
Please be stronger than your past. The future may still give you a chance.
And thank you, George Michael. Your words continue to heal long after your spirit exited this plane.
If you want to go deeper into pulling yourself up from the bottom—after a horrible incident with a narcolepsy medication, I experienced episodes of despondency where I truly didn’t care if I lived or died. I was worn out and just wanted it to be over.
This was caused by a chemical imbalance in my brain. Fortunately, I was aware of that, which helped me navigate it.
I made a video about it. If that’s something you’re experiencing—or someone you love is: When you get to the bottom… don’t forget to look up below.
