If happiness is a choice, why don't we choose it? This is the Daily Dose of Dawn at Dawn number 70. Videos designed to expand your thinking. I'm getting ready to do my first live talk at the Topanga Library in California, How to Live Happy Matters, where I'm teaching people that bringing happy along for the ride makes things a lot easier. And today I want to talk about the fact that, you know, we all hear that happiness is a choice. And I personally didn't choose it because I would get triggered. I'd be happy and then someone would upset me and instead of holding on to my happy, I'd float along on that other hard feel that I felt was handed to me.
It's super important that you understand that every feeling you've ever had came from inside of you. The first time I heard that, I felt a little shame like I did this to myself. And yeah, it's kind of hard to accept that you do do it to yourself. But once you make that consciousness, once you see, you can't unsee. And then every time you're stuck in hard feels, you can ask yourself, what am I doing to myself right now?
Okay, so the three steps to Living Happy Matters are really easy.
Remember, happy matters. When you're upset, when someone cuts you off, when you forget your lunch, remember happy is important to humaning.
Then notice all the happy things around you. This was really magnified for me when I did a gratitude exercise of a hundred things for an entire month. 100 things a day that I was grateful for for an entire month. It really helped me notice that there are things around me all the time that I am grateful for.
Then the most important part is to allow yourself to feel the happiness, to give yourself permission to be happy even in the hard thing, even in the challenge.
A great thing to ask yourself is, is this mood that I'm in giving to me or taking away from me? We often get drained and we don't stop to go, wait, what just happened that sucked all the life out of me just now?
And sometimes for me, it is just narcolepsy. It does that. But there are things in my life that will also accelerate the narcolepsy. If I feel bad about myself, if I'm mad at someone, if someone's mad at me and I don't manage those feelings, it sucks all my go juice.
You can get started on choosing happy just by asking yourself a couple times a day, how do I feel? How can I feel better? Once you make your mood a priority, you'll definitely notice how much easier it is to take on the situations that come in life, and they don't stop coming. So, shore yourself up to be ready for them.
