Facing an avalanche happens to all of us. One thing goes wrong, then another thing, then an unexpected bill and another surprise… and suddenly you’re buried under a mountain of challenges.

Having nine disabling disorders and a heavy past, I’ve gone through this over and over again. If I didn’t reframe the way I looked at it, it would have crushed me.

I talk a lot about the four stages of learning:

Notice something needs to be different.

Identify strategies that could help.

Practice those strategies.

And then practice until you become the thing you’re trying to become.

For years, my issue was remembering to practice the thing I said I wanted to do. I’d get triggered and forget everything. That’s why I created my mindset magic phrases. Lefty loosey, righty tighty. If I could remember that, I could create new cues for my emotional life too.

Now, being triggered is a call to the bat phone.

When you’re facing an avalanche, that’s your first stop. What coping strategies already work for you? Which ones can you kick into high gear? What new ones can help keep you calm and grounded?

The most important thing you can do is support yourself through it. Make your mind a playground. Take breaks. Be on your own side. Clear out the mental clutter so you’re not battling storage wars while you’re trying to climb out.
