Backsliding – Protecting yourself from yourself | #54 Daily Dose of Dawn at dawn 🌞

Personal growth isn’t linear—and backsliding doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong. In Daily Dose of Dawn at dawn #54, Dawn Super explores why knowing what needs to change isn’t enough, and how practice—not perfection—is what creates real transformation. This post looks at the stages of learning, emotional regulation, and the humor and compassion required to protect yourself from old patterns while new ones take root. You’ll learn why forgetting is part of healing, how gentle reminders help, and why becoming someone new takes time, repetition, and grace.

I had a really great meeting with a client where she finally realized that knowing what needs to change is not enough and that everyone backslides until they’ve practiced the thing enough to become different. I want to share how one simple perspective shift helped me accept that sometimes I get in my own way – and that’s ok.

Back when I was first diving into personal growth, I kept getting stuck between Step 2 and Step 3 of the stages of learning - identifying strategies and practicing them.

I would notice something needed to change. For example: being kinder to others when they woke me up. Having narcolepsy, I’m often emotionally dysregulated – but that’s not a free license to be a jerk to people. So, I would identify a strategy to try, practice it once or twice. Then, someone would wake me up… and I’d forget 🤷.

The Counting Crows have a song that helped me with this. The lyric goes: How’m I gonna keep myself away from me?

That’s exactly what I needed to do – keep myself ‘now’ away from old-me’s way of thinking and doing. Ironically, just singing the lyric in my head helped me a lot.

Then that morphed into, Have yourself a nice steamy mug of STFU 🤭

I would say that to myself EVERY morning as I made my coffee. Reminding me that I needed to keep myself away from others as much as myself… until my dopamine came online.

Healing is not a one and done. We dance with it, practicing daily until finally… we become. If you’re looking to learn & grow too, come join us at join.happymatterscollective.com to be with others who believe that happy matters.

About the Author

Dawn Super is an empowerment coach, speaker, and writer who helps people thrive — not someday, but right now, exactly as they are. She knows firsthand what it’s like to live with lifelong health challenges, including narcolepsy, and has made it her mission to teach others how to show up for themselves with compassion, courage, and a little bit of humor and sass.
Known for her “mindset magic strategies,” Dawn brings a blend of practical tools, soulful insight, and real-talk encouragement to anyone ready to stop waiting for permission to love themselves. Her work speaks especially to those who’ve felt left out, misunderstood, or stuck on the sidelines — the misfits, the dreamers, the rebels, and the overcomers.
When she’s not coaching, creating, or writing, you might find her meditating at the beach, virtually socializing, or laughing (probably at one of her own jokes). Dawn believes that self-love isn’t just a buzzword — it’s a radical act of rebellion in a world that profits from your doubt.
