Mental Wellness

Today I’m talking about my favorite brain reboots to either calm myself down or amp myself up.

Why? So you feel better (shrug). Feeling bad = hurting yourself.

What are you doing for yourself this weekend? I’d love to hear. I’ll probably be at the beach – rebooting my brain. Self care = healthcare

Sleep deprivation from narcolepsy affects my ability to regulate my emotions. Insomnia often makes sleep hard to come by. It helps me a lot if I can relax myself… when I need a nap, at bedtime - when I have looping thoughts, over thinking, or frustrated.

Countdown from 90. One number as I breathe in, the next out. I try to visualize the numbers as if they’re on a screen. It works for me.

Four square breathing. I love this ever since Brene Brown said snipers do it. Breathe in 4 seconds, hold your breath 4 seconds, out 4, hold 4. I follow a square in my mind as I do it.

Guided meditations. Find short ones on Youtube. Get out of your head, let someone else drive for a minute.

If I’m trying to ramp my energy up because my brain is taking me down then music is my go to. Close my eyes, put on my headphones, play my 3 favorite songs and dance.

Naps. If I have the time to take a nap, I will have more energy when I get up. If it doesn’t work like that for you – try going for a walk, movement indicates change!

About the Author

Dawn Super is an empowerment coach, speaker, and writer who helps people thrive — not someday, but right now, exactly as they are. She knows firsthand what it’s like to live with lifelong health challenges, including narcolepsy, and has made it her mission to teach others how to show up for themselves with compassion, courage, and a little bit of humor and sass.
Known for her “mindset magic strategies,” Dawn brings a blend of practical tools, soulful insight, and real-talk encouragement to anyone ready to stop waiting for permission to love themselves. Her work speaks especially to those who’ve felt left out, misunderstood, or stuck on the sidelines — the misfits, the dreamers, the rebels, and the overcomers.
When she’s not coaching, creating, or writing, you might find her meditating at the beach, virtually socializing, or laughing (probably at one of her own jokes). Dawn believes that self-love isn’t just a buzzword — it’s a radical act of rebellion in a world that profits from your doubt.
You can connect with Dawn, learn more about her coaching program and explore the many personal growth courses in her membership at DawnSuper.com.
