When “Home” Feels Unsafe: How to Reclaim the Word for Yourself | #123

February 11, 20262 min read

For many people, the word “home” can bring up grief, discomfort, or emotional pain instead of safety. In this Daily Dose of Dawn at dawn, empowerment coach Dawn Super explores what it means when home feels triggering and shares gentle ways to reclaim the concept of home by finding safety, belonging, and compassion within yourself.

When home is a four-letter word.

This video is for anyone who bristles or gets triggered by the word home.

Anyone who can’t go home.

Or anyone who feels like they don’t have or never had a home.

Welcome back to the Daily Dose of Dawn at dawn, videos designed to expand your thinking.

So why do we want to learn this?

Because home is a daily thing. And if it gives you the ick, it’s being on your own side to reclaim the word.

Negative feelings are designed to get us to act. So if you hear a word and you feel triggered by it, it means it’s time to dive into it and see what you can do to hold your own hand through it.

Jason Mraz has always been a pivotal artist in my healing journey, and one of his songs in particular really helped me with the word home in this regard.

The lyric is: you can see that your home is inside of you.

As someone who not only comes from a broken home but also exists in a broken body, thinking of myself as home is a win-win.

It’s a win because I always have me as long as I’m around.

And it’s a win because I can love myself even though parts of me are missing.

When your home is inside of you, you’re always home.

Another strategy I heard that I found helpful — and you might also — is to think of your home as your town. Your state. Or Earth.

With Earth as your home, you can go anywhere and not be tied to any particular feeling.

About the Author

Dawn Super is a resilience coach, speaker, and writer who helps people thrive — not someday, but right now, exactly as they are. She knows firsthand what it’s like to live with lifelong health challenges, including narcolepsy, and has made it her mission to teach others how to show up for themselves with compassion, courage, and a little bit of humor and sass.
Known for her “mindset magic strategies,” Dawn brings a blend of practical tools, soulful insight, and real-talk encouragement to anyone ready to stop waiting for permission to love themselves. Her work speaks especially to those who’ve felt left out, misunderstood, or stuck on the sidelines — the misfits, the dreamers, the rebels, and the overcomers.
When she’s not coaching, creating, or writing, you might find her picking up rusty metal at the beach, virtually socializing, or laughing along at life. Dawn believes that self-love isn’t just a buzzword — it’s a radical act of rebellion in a world that profits from your doubt.
