Your body doesn't want lip gloss, Dorothy. It wants water.
This video is for anyone who's chronically dehydrated, does not drink enough water, needs to drink more water.
This is the daily dose of Dawn at Dawn. Videos designed to expand your thinking.
Today I'm talking about a tip that just came up on my radar. I have been doing a lot of content about listening to your body. Positive emotions are helper feels to help us through life and negative emotions are alarm systems, warning bells, giving us a sign that something needs to be paid attention to.
How did this come into my awareness? I have always been dehydrated. I've just never been good about drinking water. And in 2025, I almost died of sepsis. I had a bladder infection and low blood pressure and was severely dehydrated. And I decided I really needed to start drinking more water after that.
So, I started putting mint tea. I'd steep a cup of mint tea and pour it into this pitcher that holds eight glasses of water, and I would make myself drink it every day. And I've been pretty good about it, and sometimes I slip.
I also have sugar syndrome which can dry out your eyes and your nose and your mouth. And so I have like this special lip gloss that's got a special acid in it that helps me keep my lips from being so dry. So, I have a lip gloss in the backpack and I have a lip gloss upstairs and a lip gloss downstairs.
And my lips were hurting. And I go to reach for the lip gloss. And I hear in my head, “Your body doesn't want lip gloss. It wants water.”
And it's so true. I needed to drink water. But here was my body trying to tell me something and I was looking for a different solution—something easier for me. Throw on some lip gloss rather than getting up and going to get more water and hydrating myself, taking care of myself.
All these years, my body has been telling me with dry lips, dry skin, dry eyes, headaches—yes, even dizziness—those are signs of dehydration. And I was not listening. I was glossing it over and finding other solutions that were not what my body needed, which was to be properly hydrated.
So, the next time you have dry lips, ask yourself: Do I need more water?
And if you do, drink some.
If we take the time to listen to our body when it whispers, we might not have to deal with it screaming.
