I just like hats #76 - Daily Dose of Dawn at dawn 🌞

Sometimes being authentic means not explaining yourself anymore. In Daily Dose of Dawn at dawn #76, Dawn Super shares a personal reflection on self-advocacy, sensory needs, and choosing not to apologize for what helps you navigate life. Using the simple example of always wearing a hat, this post explores boundaries, neurodivergence, chronic sleep deprivation, and the freedom that comes from letting yourself be who you are—without defending it. This is for anyone who’s tired of justifying their coping tools or being talked out of what works for them.

I just like hats. This is the Daily Dose of Dawn at dawn number 76, videos designed to expand your thinking.

This video is about sticking up for yourself as much as it is about being authentic. Some people just cannot process that I'm almost always in a hat.

There are actually legit reasons why I wear a hat, but after so many years of defending myself about them, I just decided to tell people, “I just like hats,” because I shouldn't have to explain to anybody why I always wear a hat.

If they want to ask questions, fine, but don’t try to talk me out of it because that's just silly. You don't like hats? Don’t wear them. You don't like looking at hats? Don’t look at me. Because I’ve got to be me just as much as I want you to be you.

I’m done apologizing for things that help me navigate a difficult life. I don’t care what they are.

There are actually five legit reasons why I wear a hat all the time. First, my hair is a mess sometimes. It’s very fine, but I have a lot of it.

Second, because it’s very fine but there’s a lot of it, it tickles my face and neurospicy irritates me, so I want it up out of my face and I want it to stay there. When I’m not wearing a hat, it falls into my face.

Number three, thanks to narcolepsy, sleep deprivation, broken brain—who knows—I have spatial issues, so I will legit walk straight into something without even seeing it. I used to call myself a cupboard magnet because if there was a cupboard open in the kitchen, I was sure to hit my head on it. So the hat acts like an early warning indicator, even a soft hat. I’ve met the car door with my soft hat and it still protects me more than if I wasn’t wearing one.

Fourth, California sun. Enough said, right? California sun.

And the fifth reason is because I am so sleep-deprived I have trouble regulating my body temperature sometimes, and even though I get very warm when I’m sleepy, my head gets cold.

So whether I’m going out to dinner, sitting at home, or even giving my free talk at the Topanga Library this Saturday, I will wear my hat and I won’t apologize for it.
