Why do we exist just to suffer? | #63 Daily Dose of Dawn at dawn 🌞

When life feels heavy, it’s easy to believe that suffering is the point. In Daily Dose of Dawn at dawn #63, Dawn Super gently challenges that idea by exploring the difference between pain and suffering. Drawing from lived experience with chronic illness and hardship, this post asks what happens when you stop focusing on suffering and instead turn toward self-comfort and care. You’ll learn why suffering is often a state of mind, how choosing kindness toward yourself restores energy, and why enjoying what’s available—even when life is hard—is not wrong, selfish, or naive.

Why do we exist just to suffer? #63 Daily Dose of Dawn at dawn

If you define anything in your life as suffering, this video is very important for you to listen to all the way to the end. In an earlier dose, I mentioned: if I wait until I feel better, I'll never get to do anything. So, my narcolepsy is my narcolepsy and I can't do anything about that. But what can I do something about?

Years ago now, I did an experiment on myself—I'll link the video in the comments.

What happens if I don't think about my suffering, either now or in the past (which was extensive)? What happens if, when my circumstances are weighing me down… when I'm really feeling like I'm suffering… I just look away, drown them out, focus on something else?

The short answer is: I feel better.

The longer answer is: it leads to you looking out for yourself more—being on your own side.

You exist to enjoy what there is here to enjoy. So it's okay to enjoy it even if life is hard.

Suffering is a state of mind.

So, when I feel like roadkill, I can sit here feeling lamenty pity party about it… or I can wrap myself in a blanket, comfort myself, and tell myself I'm doing a great job. I've tried it both ways—and the second way gives you a lot more go juice.

About the Author

Dawn Super is a resilience coach, speaker, and writer who helps people thrive — not someday, but right now, exactly as they are. She knows firsthand what it’s like to live with lifelong health challenges, including narcolepsy, and has made it her mission to teach others how to show up for themselves with compassion, courage, and a little bit of humor and sass.
Known for her “mindset magic strategies,” Dawn brings a blend of practical tools, soulful insight, and real-talk encouragement to anyone ready to stop waiting for permission to love themselves. Her work speaks especially to those who’ve felt left out, misunderstood, or stuck on the sidelines — the misfits, the dreamers, the rebels, and the overcomers.
When she’s not coaching, creating, or writing, you might find her picking up rusty metal at the beach, virtually socializing, or laughing along at life. Dawn believes that self-love isn’t just a buzzword — it’s a radical act of rebellion in a world that profits from your doubt.
