Be a Lighthouse, Not a Life Preserver | #24

Overgiving can quietly turn into self-abandonment. In this Daily Dose of Dawn, Dawn Super explains how shifting from rescuing others to being a steady lighthouse helps protect your energy, strengthen boundaries, and support others without losing yourself.

How I stopped over-giving, out of balance giving and being a doormat.

Helpers, people-pleasers, givers, caregivers, healers – this one is for you.

When giving feels like… giving in, giving up, being taken advantage of, being used – it doesn’t feel good.

Sometimes we get stuck in that space. If that’s you right now, keep working on it – some lessons in life take us awhile to learn & you will find them repeating in everyone you meet until you do.

Try strategies until you find the one that works. Dig deep into personal growth content (I have 200+ vids) or schedule a strategy session with me.

Sometimes we give so much to a person that we have nothing left for ourselves… or we get co-dependent… but, we can save ourselves!

Turning this around is an act of self-love. A gift that will reward you forevr

Here are two quick mindset phrases that helped me:

1. Don’t be a doormat. Just repeating that to myself helped me remember not to say yes when I needed to say no.

2. I’m throwing you a lifeline, not an anchor. As a ‘lighthouse’ you shine brightly as an example for others to save themselves. As a ‘life preserver’ you’re wading into their storm, risking your own ‘safety’ and risk them leaning on you so hard that they become anchor & you both drown. Or that you feel so responsible for them the weight has you drown yourself.

Be a lighthouse, not a life-preserver.

Don't be a doormat

About the Author

Dawn Super is a resilience coach, speaker, and writer who helps people thrive — not someday, but right now, exactly as they are. She knows firsthand what it’s like to live with lifelong health challenges, including narcolepsy, and has made it her mission to teach others how to show up for themselves with compassion, courage, and a little bit of humor and sass.
Known for her “mindset magic strategies,” Dawn brings a blend of practical tools, soulful insight, and real-talk encouragement to anyone ready to stop waiting for permission to love themselves. Her work speaks especially to those who’ve felt left out, misunderstood, or stuck on the sidelines — the misfits, the dreamers, the rebels, and the overcomers.
When she’s not coaching, creating, or writing, you might find her picking up rusty metal at the beach, virtually socializing, or laughing along at life. Dawn believes that self-love isn’t just a buzzword — it’s a radical act of rebellion in a world that profits from your doubt.
