My parents did the best they could with what they had to work with.
Thatâs what we all do. Even those people who you think are sucking on purpose are actually still doing âtheirâ best.
Coming to a deep understanding of that really helped me along with this humaning business.
When we learn better â we do better and that was the crux of my parenting style as I raised my kids.
I did what I would have wanted, instead of what I got.
So, if you feel a hole in the way you were raised, you can give all those things to yourself now, no matter how old you are.
If you donât know how, you can teach yourself. I took this to an extreme after my first marriage ended and I was looking to date again.
Up to that point, I had never had a healthy relationship. I had never witnessed a healthy relationship modeled around me growing up so I didnât even know what a healthy relationship looked like â but I knew that I had to figure it out if I wanted to have one!
So, I found a couple that I adored â that were respectful, loving, great communication, great parents, valued sexy time, together for decades, in business together, pillars in their community, the best of friends⌠Ian and Alicia.
I looked at them and the way they interacted with each other. The tone of voice that they used to talk to each other and the way they accomplished things togetherâŚ
And I made them my fake parents.
The hilarious thing is that theyâre right around my age. None of that matters when youâre looking for a role model. You just need someone to look at thatâs not a TV character or a movie actor.
I didnât even have to tell them what I was doing to make it work â because it was all happening inside my head - but I did anyway â mostly because people should be told when theyâre making a difference in the world and they definitely made a difference in mine.
And, not only mine, but lots and lots of people feel this way about them.
A lot of social things did not come easy for me. Reading about them wasnât enough. I didnât have anyone to teach me when I was young. So, reading and watching other people execute the things that I was reading about â in real life, in real situations â that really made a huge difference in my personal growth.
This is another reason why coaching is so great because you get a chance to talk about these sorts of things.
Whatever you want to learn how to do, whether itâs confidence or boundaries or being more comfortable in social settings - learn about it and find someone else whoâs doing it so you can see what it looks like in action.
