Discernment is being a good chooser

I’m not talking about your posture – but I love that visual and it does help me sit up straighter.

Today I want to talk about layers and how understanding how many you have helps you become a better chooser.

What does that mean? First, let’s look at Discernment. The ability to perceive, understand, and judge things, especially those that are not obvious, with clarity and insight. Essentially it means, being a better chooser.

OK, back to the layers. Each time you deal with anything, you put it through the ‘filter’ of your past experiences – we all do that. Some of us have had bad experiences, some of us have had a lot of bad experiences and that adds up to a lot of layers.

This was highlighted for me in my narcolepsy group when talking about shutdown statements. After 40 years of chronic illness, people always try to be helpful. I’ll work with it to a point and then I just have to shut them down or that’s all we will discuss…

So, it’s like:

Their statement reached several layers for me:

Do you think I’m stupid and don’t know that, didn’t try that?

I don’t need you to fix me

And more, you get the point.

If you’re not living with chronic illness it’s hard to imagine but when every single person you communicate with has 10 different ideas for you… it can get a little draining. Even though they’re trying to be helpful.

Ad that’s why you have to go through your layers. So that you show your appreciation for their helpfulness, but also let them know you got your life under control, you know?

Paying attention to what layers things are hitting for me, helps me process my emotions FASTER and gets me through hard feels that don’t have a place in my now reality.

Like if someone is trying to be helpful and that reminds me of a not so good relationship I had in the past, that’s another layer that I have to go through to process what’s actually happening right now.

As we go through life, we learn lessons. Being mindful of your layers, helps keep you from having to repeat the lessons. Don’t hurt yourself. Be discerning. Be a good chooser. Decide from your now, not past.

Known for her “mindset magic strategies,” Dawn brings a blend of practical tools, soulful insight, and real-talk encouragement to anyone ready to stop waiting for permission to love themselves. Her work speaks especially to those who’ve felt left out, misunderstood, or stuck on the sidelines — the misfits, the dreamers, the rebels, and the overcomers.
When she’s not coaching, creating, or writing, you might find her meditating at the beach, virtually socializing, or laughing (probably at one of her own jokes). Dawn believes that self-love isn’t just a buzzword — it’s a radical act of rebellion in a world that profits from your doubt.
