Boundaries are a super power

It’s hard to be rational when you’re behaving irrationally.

Telling someone to ‘calm down’ doesn’t usually work but telling yourself– especially once you’ve crafted some mindset magic strategies (like “Doing my best to be a no-drama llama”) and taken the time to practice, practice, practice them... it gets a lot easier.

Having narcolepsy for 40+ years (narcolepsy is a chronic neurological disease that affects the sleep / wake cycles of the brain and it can be very debilitating), I’ve always been sleep deprived. This affects the executive functions of the brain, which includes inhibition control, thinking…

This is one of the biggest reasons I’ve created all my little mindset magic phrases for myself is because it helps me remember them – ‘lefty loosy, righty tighty’  – WHEN I NEED THEM.

Whether something physical, like a magnet – or just in your own head, everyone should have their own little ‘mental health tool-kit’ filled with tricks that help them deal with being triggered, overcoming something, etc.

“This situation needs a grown up” can be like the Wonder Woman spin – repeat it and it puts your Big Pants on and you get to be your own hero.

And that might seem really silly – but, I’ve had a challenging life, and when I can laugh – I’m more relaxed… and that helps me learn better.

Four Steps to Learning

This magnet is available in my book's Companion Magnet Set

Seriously though. Going back to my four steps to learning – Notice that you’re acting immaturely. Identify some mindset tricks - that fit with who you are - to help you break the spell. Practice them each time you’re triggered (keep in mind, if you’re triggered a LOT – it’s because you have a lot to overcome still). And then, eventually, once you’ve gone through the gooey part of change you Become the grown up in the room.

If you have a temper, work on it. If you are mean in arguments, work on it. If you just simply react in a way you wish you didn’t – figure out how to not do that 🤷

Think of life like a school. Each thing you’re faced with is an opportunity to grow, to learn, to overcome whatever it is you’re facing. There’s no rule that says you can’t use things that make you laugh to help you figure it out. So, have some fun with it whenever you can.

Thanks to narcolepsy I’m always going to have trouble with emotional regulation. So, I’m constantly going to be finding easy, simple reminders to help me succeed.

If you have something you don’t like that you’re dealing with, you’ve got the rest of your life to find strategies to try on and see what fits. If you need help getting there – book a strategy session with me on my website https://DawnSuper.com/strategysession My calendar is on there and it will sort out the time differences and we can hop on a video call. I’m really good at helping people learn how to be the grown up in the room – while still acting like a kid when it fits.
